| === Description === | ===== Construction ===== |
| |
| The FK-2001 came with four physical layout configurations, all with a big-ass enter; Focus layout, a winkeyless variant, a 1.25u bottom row variant and a layout akin to the [[BTC 5339|BTC 5339]] that lacked a split right shift. | === Case & Internals === |
| |
| It also came with various national layouts; US, UK and Taiwanese. Later models with lasered keycaps had the Euro symbol engraved on the number row 5 key. | All FK-2001s were shipped with the same general aesthetics and build quality. Earliest generations were WKL models that used the "Focus Layout", with a split right shift, big-ass enter (BAE) and full-size backspace key. Some versions did a layout akin to the [[BTC 5339|BTC 5339]] that lacked a split right shift and a 1.25u bottom row that lacked any blockers. These characteristics, combined with the inclusion of a plastic dust cover, the use of a 5P DIN connector, and the lack of cut-out "partitioned blockers" in the navcluster, //could// motivate the existence/classification of "first generation" FK-2001s.** However, there is no official documentation or consensus on this nomenclature.** |
| | |
| | The "second generation" of FK-2001 included the Windows/super key and introduced the newer case style with the cut-outs in the navcluster. As the PS/2 protocol standard was introduced symmetrically with the popularization of keyboards with Windows keys, newer FK-2001s were shipped with PS/2 connectors. A number of models were produced with "power", "wake" and "sleep" keys, necessitating a different case design which removed some of the partitioned blockers in the navcluster to make space for the additional keys. |
| | |
| | A limited quantity of boards were produced in all-black. Given their rarity, documentation is sparse. It is known that black FK-2001s were delivered with the partitions in the navcluster and that they often came with the 5P DIN connector. One unique example of a black 2001 been documented without the partitions, a standard Asian 101-key layout, and a 5001 badge.(( |
| | [[https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/xtneip/if_you_know_you_know_black_focus_fk2001/]] This appears to be a one-off example as there do not appear to be any other black FK-2001s (or any beige FK-2001s) with such a layout. A photo of the PCB suggests manufacturing in the year of 1995, but this is inconsistent with the layout as it is a WKL model. Moreover, there is no hard evidence that the PCB was even made by Focus, since no Focus logo is visible (although the font used elsewhere on the PCB is consistent with that used on other Focus boards). |
| | )) |
| | |
| | === Switches === |
| | |
| | The FK-2001 has been documented with a great variety of switches. Most FK-2001s were shipped with Alps switches or Alps clones. Earlier models used genuine clicky pine SKCM switches, but later models (such as Windows key variants) are much more likely to carry Alps clones. At least one example has been reported with Futaba MA switches, and one version has been documented with Cherry MX Black. |
| | |
| | === Keycaps === |
| | |
| | The FK-2001 used a variety of ABS keycaps over it's production. Some of the earliest models, such as a portion of FK-2001s with Alps SKCM Blue, appear to have been delivered with pad-printed "Focus keycaps" that were also present on the older FK-727, FK-747 and FK-555s.(( |
| | [[https://youtu.be/TBgicoOJq_Y]] This video review includes an FK-2001 with pad-printed keycaps. Pay attention to the Caps Lock and Right Ctrl keys as they both possess legends for each other, similar to the ones that were included on the FK-555. |
| | )) All Alps variants of the board use Alps clip-in stabilizers. One variant with Cherry MX Black has been documented with Costar stabilizers. |
| | |
| | The majority of models were produced with doubleshot keycaps from an unknown manufacturer. They externally bear a strong resemblance to Tai-Hao TI/Alps OEM doubleshots, however, the "star" molding on the interior is indicative that they are of different origin. Previous discussions have purported that Tai-Hao has denied being the provider of these unique keycaps, but there is no written evidence of such. There appear to be at least two variants of these doubleshots, one with dark-grey, color-coded modifier keys, and a newer kind with light-grey modifier keys that lack any color-coding. The newer light-grey variant was delivered with the Windows key variants, however, the windows keys on such models were pad-printed. |
| | |
| | All models with the additional power, wake and sleep keys used lasered legends and are easily discerned from earlier variants as the legends are often a faded black or lighter grey. Black FK-2001s have been documented with doubleshot keycaps. |
| | |
| | === International Layouts === |
| | |
| | The FK-2001 was delivered with various national layouts; US, UK and Taiwanese. Some models with lasered keycaps had the Euro symbol engraved on the number row 5 key. |
| | |
| | The position of the Num Lock and Caps Lock indicator lights are swapped, a trend observed over most Focus boards. |
