Description

The IBM Multistation Keyboard generally refers to keyboards with the 5556 code, produced for use with the IBM 5550 Multistation computers. As the Multistation was mostly marketed in countries using CJK characters, the majority of Multistation keyboards originate from East Asia.

Several models of 5556 do not appear to have been manufactured for use with the Multistation computer; the 5556-005 (and possibly 5556-006 and 5556-007) use a completely distinctive design and form factor that sets them apart. Likewise, there appear to be a number of keyboards with similar form factors to the 5556 Multistation keyboards which were not produced for the Multistation, such as the IBM 5576-001 and IBM 3194 (P/N 64×9710).

Construction

Concerning IBM 5556 keyboards made for use with the Multistation, there appear to be at least two distinctive generations of Multistation keyboards. The majority of characteristics are symmetrical across both versions. Both use the a layout reminiscent of those used on the F122/M122 keyboards. Both use large, plastic cases that happen to be vulnerable to damage and cracking, along with spring-loaded flip-out feet that resemble those used on IBM Model F keyboards.

First Generation

The first generation used a painted plastic case, of which the color and texture of the case are highly susceptible to abrasive cleaning agents (e.g., a magic sponge). These earlier models were shipped with ABS Alps Electric doubleshot keycaps with a unique profile, along with a coiled cable and black 5P DIN connector.

Second Generation

Later models used an unpainted case susceptible to yellowing, along with PBT dyesublimated keycaps with a font that more closely resembles that on both the IBM P70 plate-spring keyboards and worldwide market IBM products (e.g., IBM Model M/F). The 5P DIN cables on later models were beige instead of black.

Switches

Models procured for IBM Japan mostly used Alps SKCL Green. Variants procured for the Korean market have been documented with Alps SKCL Brown instead.
