HHKB Studio

The HHKB Studio was introduced by PFU America in October 2023 as an all-in-one keyboard, featuring Gesture Pads and a pointing stick with accompanying mouse buttons. This HHKB uses MX-style switches.

Description

The HHKB Studio shares a lot of traits with the HHKB Professional line of keyboards in using the same compact layout as well as having bluetooth capabilites with multiple devices, similar to the HHKB Professional Hybrid. A major difference to the Professional series is the use of MX-style switches manufactured by Kailh and Gateron instead of Topre aswell as being made in China. HHKB Studio's concept was born in PFU America Inc, and the product design was done by HUGE.

To celebrate the release of the Studio keyboard, HHKB collaborated with artisan keycap artist Tinymakesthings to design a handmade artisan keycap for a limited release bundle. The artisan features the California State Bear sporting HHKB headphones.1)

The HHKB Studio features dedicated keymap tool software to edit the keymap and functionality of the gesture pads. It allows for up to four customized layout profiles and the ability to use shortcut keys to change profiles quickly. Happy Hacking Keyboard Studio Keymap Tool

Construction

Case and Internals

The HHKB Studio consists of a top and a bottom plastic case. On the bottom case there are two two-stage flip-out feet to adjust the typing angle as well as four long anti-slip rubber pads. It also comes with four AA batteries for wireless use. The top assembles with the bottom case with screws and many hidden clips around the edges. Inside the top case, the motherboard connects with ribbon cables to the 4 gesture pads as well as the PCB and plate assembly, and fastens to it by way of four screws.

The steel plate and PCB mounts to the top case with two mounting points at the top, two at the corners and two close to the spacebar. The PCB uses MX hotswap sockets in both the key arrangement and mouse buttons. The pointing stick has its own separate module screwed into the plate.

Keycaps

The keycaps used on the HHKB Studio are thick dye-sublimated PBT with recessed stems and similar in style to Topre OEM cherry profile. To allow for the pointing stick to be positioned in the center of keyboard, the “G”, “H” and “B” keys all have chamfered corner cut-outs.

The HHKB Studio does not support standard 6U spacebars. On the Studio, the 6U spacebar matches the spread of standard 6.25U spacebar stemholes.

PFU has released the Studio keycap 3D models for both the english and japanese versions in OBJ, STL and STEP formats under a license agreement which makes it available for both personal and commercial use.HHKB Studio Keytop 3D Data Released
